1. Military Rank costs 5 character points per level.
2. This represent the minimum number a character points spent on your Professional Reputation. (The GM will tell you when you can spend a point on your Professional Reputation.) The Profession Reputation of a Junior Lieutenant costs 1 character point. This reputation (B27) gives a +1 reaction per level (5 character points) from Star Fleet personnel (x1/2) occasionally (x1/3). Additional character points should be spent increasing the reaction modifier and/or how often you are recognized. Your reaction modifier can never exceed +4.
3. These levels of status cost no character points; they are part of having a high rank.
4. For officers commanding starships, this is Shiphanding. For officers commanding departments, this is Administration.
5. Should have at least one Professional Certification.
6. Should have at least two Professional Certifications or the equivalent.
7. Should have at least three Professional Certifications or the equivalent.
8. Should have at least four Professional Certifications or the equivalent.
9. Should have at least five Professional Certifications or the equivalent.

Examples

An O1 Ensign wants a promotion to O2 Junior Lieutenant. If he’s got 10 missions under his belt, if he’s got a character point in Professional Reputation, if his Leadership and Shiphandling skill levels are 12 or better, if he's got three character points in Expert Skill (Military Science) and/or Strategy, then he can inform the GM he’s ready for a promotion.

An O2 Junior Lieutenant wants a promotion to O3 Senior Lieutenant. If he’s got 30 missions under his belt (total, not 30 missions in addition to the 10 missions as an Ensign), if he’s got two character points in his Professional Reputation, if his Leadership skill level is 12 or better, if his Shiphandling skill level is 13 or better, if he's got three character points in Expert Skill (Military Science) and/or Strategy, if he’s got five unused character points he’s willing to spend to increase his GURPS Rank from level 3 to level 4, then he can inform the GM he’s ready for a promotion.
