Description
"Qaletaqa" means "guardian of the people." He was given this name by his grandfather, who taught him the ways of the Hopi. "Ahote" is his family name and means "restless one." His friends know him as "Qal."
Qal learned dreaming and meditation practice from his grandfather, a Hopi shaman and tribal leader. He studied martial arts, criminology and intelligence analysis at Starfleet Academy.
Biography
Qalataqa Ahote was born November 23, 2208 at Gabriel Bell Memorial Hospital on Martian Colony 3. His father Jason Ahote was a well-known but controversial scientist and authority on Martian geology. His mother Moira Kelly Ahote was a highly respected Star Fleet engineer. Both were hard-working and highly ambitious in their careers. In 2213, 5-year old Qal was sent to Earth to live with his grandfather, Cheveyo. His parents visited frequently, often taking the young boy on family camping trips into the New Mexico desert.
Cheveyo Ahote was a respected scholar of Vulcan philosophy, one of the few humans to have studied at the Vulcan Academy. In 2220 Cheveyo was invited by the Vulcan Government to participate in a 2-year sabbatical on Vulcan that included meditation training and instruction in esoteric Vulcan philosophy. Ahote took Qal, then age 12, to Vulcan. Qal attended studies each morning with Vulcan children, and in the afternoons studied meditation with his grandfather and a Vulcan instructor.
During their stay on Vulcan, Ahote administered the tradition Hopi rights of manhood to his grandson. This ceremony was performed as part of a cultural exchange with Vulcan. During the ceremony young Qal received his spirit animal and name, which he rarely shares with anyone.
In 2226 Qal entered the University of New Mexico, majoring in philosophy with a minor in Vulcan Studies. Cheveyo Ahote was then teaching his final year at the university.
In 2232 Qal received Master’s degree in philosophy from the University of New Mexico.
In 2232 Qal entered Star Fleet Academy.
In 2236 Qal graduated Star Fleet Academy. His first assignment was aboard the U.S.S. Valley Forge.
Marriage
On 12 June 2236, Ahote married Hil’ta, daughter of S’kel of Vulcan, in a traditional ceremony on the bride's home planet. The two had met during the Rebecca incident, Hil'ta and her father being two of the kindapping victims. When Hil’ta was later falsely implicated in a security matter, Ahote was integral to her being cleared of suspicion. Hil’ta is currently residing on Earth and attending Star Fleet Academy.

Missions
While on leave prior to Academy graduation, Cadet Ahote was involved in the SS Rebecca Incident. He successfully completed survival training on Ailebes and completed graduation requirements on stardate 3605.21, upon which he was assigned to duties aboard the U.S.S. Valley Forge. Ahote participated in Prime Team missions on several colonies as the Valley Forge traveled coreward, including Acropolis, Nautilus, Quentin, and Regalia. He has participated in missions with Starfleet Security and has expressed an interest in pursuing a security or special ops career. His latest assignment is aboard the U.S.S. Merlin in the Aurora Sector, where he serves on the Operations Staff under Commander Joli Sennit.

Personal Logs
In Surviving Ailebes, Ahote describes a routine survival training mission gone awry when Rigelian scientists crash-land on the planet, pursued by rogue Suliban.
Ahote was nearly killed on Nightmare, the mission where he met Ben Hruska.
On the planet Sinbad, Qal and Hruska defused a hostage situation and made unofficial "first contact" with a race of aquatic creatures.
Professional Relationships
Ahote has made many friends during his service with Star Fleet. Academy classmates Atomsk, Ginger, and Eric Roman served with Ahote during his first missions aboard USS Valley Forge and USS Merlin. Roman and Ahote have been workout and sparring partners since senior year, when the two met during the Marine Academy Judo tournament. Ahote is also close friends with John Travers, a Starfleet pilot and flight engineer, and frequently requests Travers whenever a mission calls for a pilot. Ahote also enjoys a warm relationship with Captain Bernard Scott, commander of USS Merlin, for whom Ahote has great admiration and respect. He has recently begun a friendship with Ben Hruska, an communications and diplomacy officer aboard the Merlin.
Death of Ensign Atomsk
On stardate 3702.17, Ensign Atomsk was killed in action on the planet Carstairs. Ahote and Atomsk had been assigned by Star Fleet Security to investigate a series of deaths on the planet. Posing as moa farmers, the two ensigns attempted to infiltrate a ring of rustlers who were suspected of murdering small ranch owners. Acting alone, Atomsk attempted to apprehend the leader of the ring, a local neobeef rancher with much wealth and political influence, and was killed while doing so. The rancher was cleared of charges on the grounds of self-defense, as Atmosk had drawn his phaser first and had no true law enforcement authority on the planet. Ahote had known Atomsk since their academy days, and felt a great deal of personal responsibility for the death of his friend.
