Polynesian Confederation

From GURPSworld Wiki

The Polynesian Confederation is nation that comprises the islands formerly known as French Polynesia. The confederation was formed in 2028, after the collapse of the French Government in that same year. The peoples of French Polynesia wished to remain as a collective entity, and formed their confederation to accomplish such. The confederation's capital is Papeete, on the island of Tahiti, the largest of the Society Islands archipelago. The Polynesian Confederation is home to some 561,448 people, about half of whom live on Tahiti.

Government

The government of the Polynesian Confederation functions as a non-representative democracy. Any adult citizen of the Polynesian Confederation who has served at least one term of public service may vote on any government issue. Any citizen may propose legislation via petition. All of this has been made possible by a sophisticated system of electronic voting that was first developed for interactive talent shows in the early part of the 21st century. Over the course of the last decade, The Polynesian Confederation has taken a decidedly anti-corporate stance. Much of its legislation has been aimed at heavily taxing and regulating corporations, as well as countless other measures to make the business climate within the Polynesian Confederation completely inhospitable to corporations. The result of this is a total lack of multinational corporate presence. The overwhelming majority of commerce in the Polynesian Confederation is derived from government or from locally owned businesses, the largest sector of which is tourism.

Economy

Much of the economy of the Polynesian Confederation is publicly owned and run, and the Polynesian Confederation is seen as one of the few remaining government states remaining in the world today (as opposed to corporate states). Tourism historically has been and still is the largest sector of the economy of the Polynesian Confederation, but the technology and energy sectors have grown immensely since the confederation's formation in 2028. Most notably, solar energy and biomimetic research have emerged as forerunners in the economy of the Polynesian Confederation.
