Overseas Shipholding Group

From GURPSworld Wiki

The Overseas Shipholding Group was founded in the 1970s and saw slow and steady growth for the first three decades of its existence. In the early 2000s, the company benefited from sharp rises in oil prices and amassed sufficient capital to invest in drilling and diversity into other areas of shipping. As with many companies in sectors related to oil and oil transportation, OSG, saw sharp ups and downs from 2006 until 2010. In late 2010, upon discovery of the mammoth Argentine Shale in Argentine and Scotia seas, off the east coast of Argentina's Tierra del Fuego and Santa Cruz provinces, demand for oil surged, as fears of the end of oil subsided in the wake of this find. This was a significant turn for OSG, because of their large stake in the drilling operations in this area. Needless to say, what is now known as the largest oil reservoir in the history of the world was an unexpected find, and it reshaped the energy industry for decades to come. Following this windfall, OSG made many acquisitions, primarily in the energy and shipping industries, culminating in the acquisition of international shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk in 2023, securing OSG as the world's largest transportation company. Following this acquisition, OSG went on to acquire giants Valero Energy and Marathon Oil, further increasing its market share in the energy sector.

OSG currently maintains headquarters in many cities throughout the world, with its primary offices in Houston, Texas, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Athens, Greece, and Copenhagen, Denmark. With the gradual decline of the Oil Age since the late 2020s, OSG has moved into other areas of energy production, and has returned its focus primarily to international transportation and maritime security. OSG has undertaken joint operations with the Halon corporation to secure treacherous areas in international waters, such as the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia and The Strait of Malacca in in Southeast Asia. While piracy and anti-corporate terrorist activities in these areas have declined since these efforts began, the threat of violence and the loss of corporate assets still persists.
