Hunting on Aurora-3

Hunting and other outdoor activities in the area within the jurisdiction of Aurora Colony government are subject to certain restrictions and regulations. Hunting is permitted year-round in Aurora Colony and the nearby areas of Aurora-3. Hunting is restricted to the following species: bear, boar (large and small), deer, python, rabbit. Bear hunting is restricted to a three-month late summer season, which corresponds roughly with the late summer and early autumn of the Terran calendar. The limit is per 3-person hunting party, as required by Aurora hunting regulations, as well as common sense. Please consult with the Aurora Colony game Warden for further information.

Weapons Regulations

Current technology is quite advanced for the hunting of both large and small game. In accordance with the philosophies which guide the colony, only certain weapons are allowed for hunting in Aurora Colony. Only those weapons listed below are legal for use in hunting. “Classic” weapons such as bow and arrow, crossbow, and other muscle-powered ranged weapons are also allowed. Use of other weapons is prohibited and will result in prosecution. The following list of weapons represents the most commonly used hunting weapons on Aurora Colony. Other weapons are subject to the approval of the colony marshal or game warden.

Laser Hunting Rifle (TL9). Lightweight but sturdy, with built-in sighting scope for high accuracy over long range. Smoke, fog, rain, cloud, etc. give the target additional DR equal to the visibility penalty. Its expense and maintenance place it out of the price range of all but the wealthiest Aurorans.

Most local hunters use conventional ammunition. This is due not only to cost and availability but is also related to the neo-transcendentalist philosophy of most Aurora colonists, which holds reverence and respect for nature. Colonists regard hunting with laser rifle to be less of a challenge and thus less honorable, as the prey has little chance against a laser equipped with tracking and targeting devices. Conventional rifles and ammunition are restricted by caliber of ammunition rather than type of rifle.

Hunting Rifle, 7mmCL (TL9): This plastic-and-alloy semi-automatic rifle fires conventional high-velocity ballistic ammunition. This is the most common weapon in use by Aurora colonists. Hunting rifles may be modified with a telescopic sight.

Needle Pistol, 3mm (TL9): A small-caliber air gun that can fire a bullet or a drugged dart.

Needle Rifle, 3mm (TL9): A higher-powered air rifle, otherwise similar to the needle pistol.

Tangler, 25mm (TL9): A compressed gas gun about the size of a shotgun, with a folding stock. It fires a 25mm projectile at a very low velocity. It usually fires tangler (p. 155) ammunition, but can also fire other 25mm warhead rounds or solid metal slugs.

A tangler warhead releases a mass of sticky weblike polymers. Anyone struck is grappled and rooted in place. The victim cannot select the Move or Change Posture maneuvers or change facing, and is at -4 to DX. The ST of this effect depends on the warhead size; see the table below. Additional hits layer over a victim; each extra layer further increases ST.

To break free, the victim must win a Quick Contest of ST or Escape skill against the ST of the attack. Each attempt takes one second. If the victim fails to break free, he loses 1 FP but may try again. Alternatively, he may try to destroy the tanglestrands. Innate Attacks hit automatically; other attacks are at -4. External attacks take no penalty, but risk hitting the victim on a miss (see Striking Into a Close Combat, p. B392). The tangle strands have DR = ST/3 (round down). Each point of damage reduces ST by 1. At ST 0, it is destroyed and the victim is freed. The 64mm and 100mm tangler warheads fill a one-yard radius: anyone standing next to the target struck will also be affected, as an area-effect attack. Hand grenades and mines use the warhead damage. Guns and launchers replace their piercing damage with the damage shown below.

Shotguns. Shotguns are a special category of slugthrower: lowpowered, short-barrel smoothbores firing large rounds, often with multiple projectiles. Most ultra-tech conventional shotguns fire 18.5mm (12 gauge) plastic-cased ammo.
