Akira Kandagawa was born in 2216 in San Francisco, California, on Earth. His parents are Michiko and Keichi Kandagawa. His mother, Michiko, is a botanist and his father is a mathematician. Both are professors at Stanford University.

Akira Kandagawa was a gifted student from a very early age, showing high aptitude in mathematics and science. He went to an accelerated primary school program, and entered high school one year early. As a youth, Kandagawa was a competitive strategema player, and a participant in the national Mathematics Olympiad. Subsequently, he entered university early, but decided after his freshman year to transfer to Starfleet Academy. His parents were at first disappointed, but eventually grew to respect his decision to serve in Starfleet. Kandagawa began his studies at Starfleet Academy hoping to eventually serve as a science officer. But, his mentors at the academy noticed his uncanny and precise abilty to gain an insight into people and their unique psychologies. Because of this, he was steered into a course of study focusing on psychology, with medical training to supplement this path. Following his years at the academy, Kandagawa received a Ph.D. in psychology, and spent time traveling aboard starships and serving at starbases studying under counselors, before being assigned to the USS Merlin as ship's counselor and medical assistant.

Outside of his work as a Starfleet officer, Kandagawa spends his leisure time gardening (something he learned from his mother), and studying or playing strategema. Most of his personal interests surround the areas of science and technology, and he is always up to date about the latest developments in those fields.
