January

1 – The ship SS Catala is driven onto the beach in Ocean Shores, Washington, stranding her.

3 – League of Nations General Assembly elects Russian Republic to the League Council.

4 – U.S. President Richard M. Nixon proclaims his "Great Society" during his State of the Union Address.

12 – The bodies of two 15-year-olds, Christine Sharrock and Marianne Schmidt, are found at Wanda Beach, Sydney.

14 – The Prime Minister of Northern Ireland and the Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland meet for the first time in 43 years.

20 – Richard M Nixon is sworn in for his second term as U.S. President.

21 – Miles Davis Quintet plays the Blue Lotus (through Jan 23).

22 – Bethany Johnson commits suicide.

24 – Winston Churchill dies in London.

28 – President Nixon appoints former Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson as US Ambassador to the League of Nations.

February

3 – Earthquake measuring 3.4 on Richter scale. Epicenter: San Andreas, CA.

7 – Raid on Promethean Foundation headquarters in Los Angeles results in the arrest of several individuals associated with an international organized crime ring dealing in stolen occult artifacts.

9 – The body of Freddie Gumm is discovered near Cave City, California. Magdalena Carter is reported dead in Paris, France.

11 – C.C.C. members David Siegel, Greg Lightman, Jimmy Crane, and Sterling Brown are killed when Siegel's car is struck by a train. The group are returning from a wake for Freddie Gumm and were thought to be highly intoxicated.

12 – In the wake of a violent communist uprising, the kingdom of Bhutan requests assistance from Tibet.

13 – Magdalena Carter releases notarized documentation affirming she is alive but refuses to appear in public due to concerns for her personal safety. She denies any knowledge of or complicity in the alleged crimes of any Promethean Foundation members. Her representative Sir Mycroft Jones accuses the US government of “slanderous persecution through onerous prosecution” and vows a vigorous defense.

15 – Tibetan military advisers arrive in Bhutan.

21 – Malcolm X, a Muslim prophet and reputed magician, is publicly assassinated in New York. His wife and several others are injured in the melee. The assassins escape without harm in the confusion.

22 – Body of Malcolm X disappears from NYC morgue. Morgue attendant claims he saw a bright light and when he went to investigate, he saw Malcolm sitting upright. Drug tests showed the attendant was using marijuana at the time and had a history of heroin and psychedelic use.

25 – Malcolm X spotted outside Nation of Islam mosque in Harlem. Over thirty people claim to have seen Malcolm raise his arms and bless the crowd in Arabic.

27 – Memorial service for Malcolm X in Harlem.

28 – British anarchists break into the London Zoo overnight and free two golden eagles, a male and female pair named Goldie and Regina.

March

2 – Escaped eagles Goldie and Regina attack two terriers in Regents Park of London, but are chased away by the owner before the dogs are grievously harmed.

3 – Malcolm X sighted in Harlem.

4 – Harvard University scientist Carl Sagan, who claims that broadcast power may be causing the planet to warm at an alarming rate. Sagan's theory, developed in cooperation with Russian scientist Nikolai Tsygichko, is dismissed by most scientists and governments.

5 – Stage magician Vassago the Great makes his debut performance in Las Vegas.

6 – Goldie and Regina are spotted killing ducks at the home of the American ambassador to Britain.

12 – Marjorie Cameron purchases Bellatrix Publications.

13 – Sunday edition of Angel City Times cover features photograph of the Gonzago Botanica and an article about the “occult explosion” in Los Angeles. An interview profile of Marjorie Cameron that refers to her as the “empress” of the local occult scene.

20 – SNAP-10A experimental nuclear reactor launched by WSC.

26 – Under pressure from aggressive attorneys (as well as international representatives of various governments) and unable to provide any evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Magdalena Carter, the Department of Justice returns possession of her house and other personal belongings.

April

1 – Angel City Times society section publishes notice of Gardner Graves and Marjorie Cameron wedding in Beverly Hills.

3 – Marjorie Cameron signs 19-year lease on Alden House for $456. The $2 per year month rate, the minimum allowed under California law, is said to be a wedding gift from Magdalena Carter.

8 – Military units of Pakistan and India begin skirmishing in Kashmir.

11 – Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak. 47 tornadoes (15 significant, 17 violent, 21 killers) occur in the Midwest U.S. states of Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. 271 people were killed and 1,500 injured (1,200 in Indiana).

15 – 3.8 earthquake, epicenter Riverside, CA.

20 – Tesla Corp files a libel suit against Sagan for his “dangerous and defamatory theories.” They call upon the US government and World Science Council to intervene, claiming Sagan represents a threat to global security do to his “fear-mongering” of a “fantastic global warming catastrophe.”

21 – NY World's fair reopens.

23 – Pneumatic train tunnel beneath English Channel completed.

25 – On this Sunday morning teenage sniper Michael Clark kills three and wounds others shooting at cars from a hilltop along Highway 101 just south of Orcutt, California. Sixteen year old Clark kills himself as police rush hilltop.

28 – U.S. troops are sent to the Dominican Republic by President Nixon, "for the stated purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and preventing an alleged Communist takeover of the country", thus thwarting the possibility of "another Cuba."

29 – Nick Lacata and associates indicted by federal grand jury for racketeering, forgery, theft and fraud. Story in the April 29 edition of Angel City Times, “Promethean Foundation Re-Opens Doors,” notes that Marjorie Cameron, known as the Occult Queen of Los Angeles, has been named director of the Promethean Foundation. She blames the recent controversy on the previous Foundation team, which was “made up of criminals and malcontents;” she also cite “government interference" and implies a set-up by the FBI. Under Cameron's management, the new foundation will be less proactive in its approach and devote itself to research rather than field operations.

May

1 – OSI expedition OPERATION DEEPDISH departs from Los Angeles to Hawaii to French Marquesas.

3 – Privately funded ODYSSEY ONE expedition, headed by Daniel Vanlandingham, departs San Diego at 08:00 for Auckland, New Zealand. Several former associates of the Promethean Foundation are thought to be aboard.

4 – Government of Bangladesh announces intention to join the Tibetan Republic.

5 – 5.2 earthquake, epicenter located miles beneath Los Angeles, CA. The powerful quake is long in duration but mild in effect due to its location deep beneath the surface. Some older buildings are damaged but there are no fatalities.

6 – Tornado Outbreak in Twin Cities, Minnesota, kills 13 and injures 683. Earthquake in Los Angeles measuring 4.1 on Richter scale. Three couples exploring caves in Griffith Park disappear.

7 – Twin brother and sister gunned down in Chinatown. Residents of Santa Monica are rattled when massive sinkholes open overnight throughout the beach community. No one is killed but several homes are damaged.

8 – Seismic subsidence at Salton Lake results in nearby resort communities being flooded by the rapidly rising waters. A toxic chemical release results in the evacuation and eventual abandonment of the area.

9 – Sixty-six members of the UFO cult known as the Brotherhood of the Seven Rays commit suicide at their farm in rural Orange County.

11 – Tesla Corp files a cease and desist motion against Harvard University scientist Carl Sagan, demanding he cease lecturing and publishing his “disreputable theories.”.

12 – Russian scientist Nikolai Tsygichko is killed in an automobile accident in Moscow.

13 – Sinkholes throughout East Los Angeles disrupt traffic and result in several injuries.

14 – Multiple quakes strike Los Angeles area in a 24-hour period. Buildings throughout the city are damaged; hundreds of people are injured, with a dozen killed by falling debris or fires.

15 – Fires break out in the Hollywood Hills. Mayor of Los Angeles asks Governor Brown for National Guard troops.

16 – National Guard troops begin arriving and deploying throughout Los Angeles, assisting emergency services and police.

18 - The Metternich Stele is stolen from display in the Egyptian Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The thief also removes an untranslated scroll of uncertain provenance from the museum's warehouse storage area, where he is seen by a guard. The guard describes the man as wearing a "leprechaun hat" and disappearing into thin air with the scroll.

19 - World Science Council announces astronauts for Frontier 2 mission to lunar surface. The list includes no Americans, which angers many.

24 – At 9:00 in the morning a 4.2 earthquake strikes, centered twelve miles northeast of Pasadena in the Angeles National Forest. Hikers late report strange creatures, including a giant spider and and other weirdness. Several people are missing from a campground the campground itself is in fact missing. A forest fire breaks out late that night.

25 – Forest fires erupt in Santa Monica Mountains.

27 - Earthquake. Epicenter, 9 mi off coast of Venice Beach

28 - Governor Brown declares a state of emergency.

30 – President Nixon visits Los Angeles.

31 - At 1:17 AM a massive and prolonged quake (later reported to be up to 8.1 in intensity and nearly 60 seconds in duration) strikes the Los Angeles area. Severe damage occurs throughout the city. Elsewhere the Salton Lake basin floods dramatically creating a large inland sea and several large rifts appear along the San Andreas fault.

June

1 - A coal mine explosion in Fukuoka, Japan kills 237 workers.

4 - An estimated 1400 people are killed when massive sinkholes destroy a village in the Peruvian province of Oyon.

5 - Topeka, Kansas struck by F5 level tornado, devastating the city's downtown and killing 18 people.

7 - A mining accident in Kakanj, Bosnia results in 128 deaths.
