Firebase Maholic (31°30'21"N 65°50'52"E) was formed out of a compound used by Mullah Mohammed Omar as his living quarters. Located outside of Kandahar the original compound was constructed in 1996, reportedly with the some of the construction costs being shouldered by Osama bin Laden. The compound is sprawling and luxurious in comparison to most U.S. firebases. Amenities include a cafeteria with double-wide fireplace, a two-tiered fountain with catfish, and a swimming pool. US Army Special Forces soldiers stationed at Maholic set up a shooting range and use the compound for mission planning. A number of elite Canadian soldiers stationed at Maholic in 2007. The camp is also used to help train Afghan National Police. The complex was first called Camp Gecko. It was renamed Firebase Maholic after Master Sergeant Thomas Maholic, of Bradford, Pennsylvania, was killed in Kandahar province's Panjwayi district in June, 2006.
