Antonio Gonzago

Antonio “Toño” Gonzago (1915-) is the older brother of Santiago Gonzago and the arch-mage of the Gonzago family.

Antonio Gonzago is regarded as the most powerful shaman of the Gonzago family and has been initiated into the highest ranks of Santeria. He is said to have begun communicating with spirits at an early age, and later in life began to physically travel throughout the planes. He studied anthropology, art and painting at the University of Havana, receiving his doctoral degree in 1941.

Antonio left Cuba for the United States in 1950, first residing in Miami before traveling north and purchasing farmland in Georgia and South Carolina. In 1952 he lived in New York and became associated with the art scene.

Federico Gonzago, oldest son of Antonion's brother Fidel, moved to the United States in 1963 to study at the University of Southern California. Antonio moved to Los Angeles in 1964, where he lives in Echo Park with his nephew. The Gonzagos operate a popular botánica located in downtown Los Angeles.
