Xavier Hellestromme did not die in the 1926 fire at his Muroc compound, but he remained unseen for the next six years. For many years he operated as the mysterious “Frater X,” subverting or destroying the numerous occult and magical societies that existed throughout the United States. He accumulated great power and several followers during this period of time. While the Prometheans encountered his followers throughout these years, they were never able to locate Hellestromme via magical or other means.
In 1932 Hellestromme tipped his hand by initiating a series of events meant to open a gate to the Outer Planes. Operating from one one his mining operations in New Mexico, Hellestromme had refined his attempts to combine magic and technology into a single device that would allow him to manipulate the very fabric of reality. His attempt to activate the device was interrupted by the first team of Prometheans, led by Magdalena Carter. As a result of the vast energies stored within the device, a massive implosion occurred and Hellestromme was presumed destroyed in the blast. This event is thought to be connected with the declining effectiveness of magical operations in the world, though the exact nature of the connection is not known.
Throughout the 1940s various magicians and psychics claim to have made contact with Hellestromme on another plane. From 1947-1954, some magicians encountered him in place of Choronzon while crossing the Abyss, and relayed Hellestromme's claim that he had defeated the demon and was rewarded with guarding the plane for an eon.
In response to these increasing tales of Hellestromme's presence on the planes, in 1951 Magdalena Carter re-assembled the team known as the Prometheans. They discovered that Hellstromme's followers had formed a cult called Wakers of the Dreaming God who had preserved portions of his anatomy and intended to utilize necromantic magic to resurrect their master. Using foul spells found only in the Necronomicon, the cultists embraced madness and constructed a magical doppelganger of Hellestromme, a golem of flesh and bone.
In 1956 the cult traveled to Tibet where they murdered several members of a Tibetan sect devoted to protecting the Five Objects of Desire. Using the Dagger of Yama and the other items, the cultists “sacrificed” their living flesh-golem, allowing the departed soul of Hellestromme to enter the fabricated body. He first struck at his old nemesis Magdalena Carter, the resulting injuries nearly killing her. During the ensuing battle Harriet Hartford and Daniel Van Helsing were brutally killed, while Samuel Welles and Zephyr Adams managed to open a portal to the Abyss. Adams gave her own life to ensure Hellestromme was cast forever into the hellish planes. Welles has spent most of his remaining life in sanitariums or in seclusion. Carter recovered but lost the use of both legs and one eye. There has been no subsequent report of Hellestromme's appearance on any plane of existence and supernatural sources have confirmed the sorcerer is utterly destroyed.
