Carl Kolchak
Born Karel Kolchak (May 7, 1922), Carl Kolchak is the only son of Los Angeles police detective Karel Kolchak and his wife Grace. Fascinated by his father's stories, he became a journalist after graduating from the University of Southern California in 1943. He worked for newspapers in Des Moines, Kansas City, Detroit, New Orleans, and Chicago before returning to Los Angeles in 1950. He became the war correspondent for the Los Angeles Times in 1951. In 1957 he became the lead local reporter for the Angel City Times and the following year he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting for his revealing coverage of the trials of various Los Angeles crime syndicate figures. In 1960 he was named lead crime reporter for the Angel City Times.
